The Megadoor Concept

Mikael Sandström

By Mikael Sandstrm, Sales Support Engineer, Megadoor AB

The customer needs The Megadoor is designed for customers with special industrial environments where doors are exposed to moisture, cold and dust or where the door opening is very large. Megadoor is an electrically operated vertical folding door consisting of double vinyl-coated polyester sheets with extruded aluminium beams in-between. Megadoor is an increasingly popular door concept in a variety of industries like aircraft hangars, aerospace, heavy mechanical industries, smelters, mineral processing, recycling, food industries, shipyard docks and more.

Basic construction
The Megadoor is built to last! Its unique design features two panels or curtains of vinyl-coated, polyester fabric supported by horizontal, extruded aluminium beams. The door is constructed with solid, heavy duty and corrosion resistant components, and the reliable electric system includes sealed motors to prevent dirt and dust infiltration.

Function
The Megadoor glides up and down in weather-sealed vertical guides which are attached to the structure and operates by lifting the bottom beam upwards, thereby stacking the intermediate beams one on top of the other, with fabric folds on both sides. Opening and closing speed is dependent on model and varies between 0.2 and 0.6 m/s. The Megadoor is designed with very few moving parts and requires little or no maintenance. It is particularly applicable to satisfy heavy wind load requirements, since, due to the unique design; the horizontal beams transfer the wind load to the vertical guides and the structure. The door can therefore be designed to withstand virtually any windload by varying the size and spacing of the beams.

Why a megadoor?

The Megadoor is built to last!

Its unique door leaf features double vinyl-coated polyester curtains, supported by horizontal aluminium beams.

The Megadoor glides up and down in weather-sealed vertical aluminium guides attached to the structure, and operates by lifting the bottom beam upwards, thereby stacking the intermediate beams one on top of each other, with fabric folding on both sides. The Megadoor is designed to cycle for years with little or no wear and it is extremely lightweight because of the extensive use of aluminium and polyester.

Engineered for reliability

The lightweight qualities, however, do not inhibit the doors toughness and durability; in fact, the flexible Megadoor is built for heavy traffic and corrosive environments. In the event that the Megadoor is damaged, it is easily repaired with little or no interruption of normal traffic.

The Megadoor is particularly suited for shot-blasting and painting facilities since the durable fabric is virtually unaffected by sand, paint or grit. Special fabrics for increased fire protection are available upon request. There are virtually no limitations to the height and width of a Megadoor. Each Megadoor is specifically built to fit the customers needs. Many applications require a multiple door system for extremely large openings. The Megadoor design provides the possibility for doors with multiple mullions that swing up to create larger openings, e.g. in aircraft hangars.

Engineered for durability

The Megadoor is designed for a very tight fit, with weather seals on both sides of the vertical guides and on the bottom beam. The airspace between the double seamless curtains forms excellent air tightness and a good insulator. Additionally, its corrosion-resistant components make the Megadoor suitable for areas where corrosion would otherwise be a problem.

Megadoor is extremely wind resistant due to its unique design and structure. The door can be designed to withstand almost any wind load by varying the size and the spacing of the beams.

Regular maintenance is needed on all doors regardless of application, simply to obtain optimal function at all times and to reduce the need for repairs. Crawfords service organization will take care of any urgent problems in an efficient way with minimal delay for the customer.

Megadoor Safety and Quality

The MEGADOOR is designed for maximum user safety and comfort.

Some advantages compared to other systems:

The MEGADOOR has no unexpected squeezing points or motion pattern.

  • No protruding moving parts.
  • Anti drop devices.
  • Components are corrosion resistant and fatigue-safe.
  • Automatic locking in closed position.
  • Strong and flexible. Built for tough environments.
  • Robust and well protected electrical system.
  • Different control systems available.
  • Dimensioning criteria for MEGADOOR are according to current standards or better.

The MEGADOOR door leaf has corrosion protected/stainless steel safety arresters, preventing the door from accidentally falling down. During normal operation they are activated at every opening and closing and will immediately stop and support the door in the event of a suspension element rupture.

A slack belt/rope breaker stops the drive unit in case of belt/rope rupture or if an obstruction should prevent the door from being closed.

The moveable mullions where provided, have a lifting motor with an over speed brake, preventing the mullion from falling in case of motor or primary brake failure.

Wind Locking
The safety arresters have a built-in wind lock, which is activated and locks the bottom beam when the door reaches its closed position. This locking makes the floor seal tight and stabilizes the bottom beam.

Intermediate aluminium beams
By varying the size and spacing of the intermediate horizontal beams the MEGADOOR can withstand virtually any wind load and still be weather-sealed.

Sensitive Edge
As standard the MEGADOOR types 800 and 1000 (up to 16x16 m) are equipped with a continuously monitored sensitive electrical tape switch at the bottom of the door. If the door hits any obstacle, it immediately stops and returns to its original position.

For safe closing of larger doors, the system requires a constant pressure on closing button including observation during the operation.

Control system
A number of manual and automatic control systems for opening and closing commands are available - determined by required safety level.

Quality Assurance and Tests
The Company MEGADOOR AB is ISO-9001 certified and the doors are CE-marked conforming to the European (EC) regulations for deliveries within the European Union. The safety arresters used in all doors are tested by TV and BG certified.

Our business mission
Megadoor shall supply innovative opening solutions that in a reliable way contribute to our customers protection of property, better working conditions, simplified material handling, energy savings and a cleaner environment.

Quality Management Policy
With consideration for persons and environment, we should strive for quality and continuous improvements in all our activities to achieve: satisfied customers, profitability and joy in work.
